Suburban Furniture Four Generations of History
Curtis Burt started Hilltop Furniture in 1949 located on
Southwest 29th Street in Oklahoma City. His son Jack worked
in the store while in high school and college. Jack married
Pat Rice in 1954, and continued to work in his father’s
store until 1959. At that time, he and Pat started Suburban
Contemporary Furniture on southwest 57th and Pennsylvania
also in Oklahoma City. They sought to bring modern and contemporary
furniture fashion, design and style at affordable prices to
Oklahoma. Over the next twenty years, they opened locations
in both south and north Oklahoma City. In 1976 Jeff, Jack
and Pat’s oldest son, married Sherry Loving and went
to work in the family business. Jack and Pat retired in 1987.
They closed all but one north location at 3118 N. May Avenue
where Jeff and Sherry took over managing the family business.
In 1995, the Burt family fulfilled a life long dream, and
built their current location at 201 N. Portland. The 63,000
square foot store is a dream come true for Jack and Pat. In
2004 Jeff and Sherry’s oldest son, Brandon started working
in the business. Their youngest son, Jeremy joined the business
in late 2005.
